Cross-Functional Product Leadership

AI Product & Business Strategy →

Teaches students to lead product outcomes across organizational boundaries without direct authority. Covers translating between engineering, design, sales, and executive perspectives; running effective cross-functional processes (sprint participation, stakeholder alignment, product reviews); managing competing priorities from multiple stakeholders; defending roadmap decisions; and the interpersonal skills of leading through influence rather than hierarchy. Students learn to be the hub that connects functions and drives alignment.

Learning Objectives

Objectives

Depth
  • Translate between engineering, design, sales, and executive languages: convey technical constraints in business terms, business requirements in technical terms, and customer needs in both Apply
  • Run cross-functional alignment meetings: set clear agendas, drive to decisions (not just discussion), capture action items with owners, and follow up on commitments Apply
  • Manage competing stakeholder priorities: when engineering wants to refactor, sales wants a new feature, and leadership wants a metric to move — negotiate, sequence, and communicate the plan Evaluate
  • Defend product roadmap decisions to skeptical audiences using data, customer evidence, and strategic rationale Apply
  • Navigate cross-team dependencies: identify blockers early, exhaust informal resolution before escalating, and communicate timeline impact to affected stakeholders Apply
  • Manage without authority: build alignment through evidence, empathy, and earned trust rather than position power Apply
  • Set and manage OKRs for a product area: write measurable objectives, align key results with team capacity, and report progress honestly Apply
  • Facilitate product review and quarterly business review (QBR) meetings that synthesize what was shipped, impact on metrics, learnings, and next-quarter priorities Apply
  • Resolve situations where data supports one decision and stakeholder sentiment supports another, by making the tradeoff explicit and the decision transparent Analyze

What You'll Build

Cross-Functional Leadership Case Study — Student manages a simulated cross-functional product initiative: writes the cross-functional brief (problem, stakeholders, dependencies, timeline), runs a stakeholder alignment meeting (recorded), resolves a priority conflict between engineering and sales (written analysis with decision and rationale), defends a roadmap to a simulated executive audience, writes a QBR presentation (what shipped, metric impact, learnings, next quarter), and produces an OKR set for a product area with measurable key results.
