E-Learning Authoring Tools

AI + Learning & Training Design →

Teaches proficiency in the authoring tools that instructional designers use daily to build e-learning content. Covers Articulate Rise (responsive, block-based) and Articulate Storyline (interactive, branching scenarios), AI-assisted content development workflows, AI video generation (Synthesia/HeyGen), screen recording (Camtasia/Loom), and template library development. Students build real courses — not just learn interfaces — and develop the time estimation skills that prevent every project from going over budget.

Learning Objectives

Objectives

Depth
  • Build responsive e-learning modules in Articulate Rise using lessons, blocks (text, image, video, interaction, knowledge check), and branching structures Apply
  • Build interactive e-learning courses in Articulate Storyline using scenes, slides, layers, triggers, variables, and branching scenarios with decision points and consequences Apply
  • Evaluate when to use Rise (simple, responsive, fast) vs. Storyline (complex interactions, branching, simulations, drag-and-drop assessments) based on content requirements and audience Evaluate
  • Create AI-assisted content using Claude for narration scripts, scenario dialogue, assessment items, and instructional text — then review for accuracy, tone, and cultural sensitivity Create
  • Produce AI-generated presenter videos using Synthesia or HeyGen, evaluating when AI video is appropriate vs. when filmed video is required Apply
  • Record and edit screen-capture tutorials and walkthroughs using Camtasia or Loom with annotations, callouts, and professional audio Apply
  • Build reusable template libraries (branded, accessible, pre-configured) in both Rise and Storyline that enable consistent, rapid production across a team Create
  • Estimate build time for e-learning projects based on content complexity, interaction density, review cycles, and tool selection — and calibrate estimates against actuals Apply

What You'll Master

Articulate Rise

Block-based responsive course building, lesson structure, knowledge checks, Rise-appropriate content design.

Articulate Storyline

Trigger/variable logic, branching scenarios, drag-and-drop interactions, slide layers, animation timelines, character integration.

AI Content Production

Claude for instructional text, Synthesia/HeyGen for video, evaluating AI output for accuracy and appropriateness.

Screen Recording & Video

Camtasia/Loom capture, editing, annotations, callouts, audio quality, export formats.

Production Efficiency

Template libraries, reusable assets, build time estimation, calibrating estimates vs. actuals to improve scoping accuracy.

What You'll Build

E-Learning Course Build — Student builds two complete course modules: (1) a Rise module (responsive, 10-15 minutes, with text/image/video/interaction blocks and a knowledge check) and (2) a Storyline module (branching scenario with at least 3 decision points, consequence paths, drag-and-drop or click-to-reveal interaction, and scenario-based assessment). Both modules use AI-assisted content (with annotations showing what Claude drafted vs. what was edited). Includes a reusable template (branded, accessible), a build time log comparing estimated vs. actual hours per component, and exported files ready for LMS deployment.

Industry Tools, Not Toy Projects
